These two names dominate searches for deep treatments for damaged hair, and they are constantly confused. Understandably so: the first contains no botox, and the second covers two very different realities depending on whether you mean a salon protocol or an at-home product. Let's set the record straight.
Hair botox: a plumping treatment, with no botox
There is no botulinum toxin in it: the name is a marketing image, by analogy with the "plumped" effect sought in aesthetics. Hair botox is an intensive filling mask: a concentrated cocktail of actives (often hyaluronic acid, collagen, proteins, vitamins, ceramides, sometimes keratin) that temporarily fills the gaps in the fibre.
- Effect: plumped hair, smoother to the touch, shinier, reduced frizz. It does not stiffen the hair: curls stay curls.
- Duration: from a few weeks to 2 or 3 months depending on how often you wash, as the actives gradually rinse away.
- Where: in a salon (usually reckon on 40 to 100 € per session) or as an at-home kit.
- Limit: it is filling, not rebuilding. The effect is real but temporary, and calls for regular courses.
"Keratin": two products with nothing in common
When people talk about keratin, it is always worth specifying which one they mean.
1. Keratin straightening (salon)
A technical protocol combining a straightening product, keratin and a pass with heated plates to lastingly relax the curl and coat the fibre. Spectacular results on frizz, holding for 3 to 6 months, but a high price (often 150 to 400 €) and genuine precautions to take regarding the composition of the products used. We devote a detailed comparison to it: Brazilian straightening, keratin straightening or keratin haircare.
2. Keratin haircare (at home)
A shampoo, mask or mist enriched with hydrolysed keratin: the protein that makes up 90-95% of hair, cut into fragments short enough to settle in the weakened zones of the fibre. No straightening effect and no heated plates: the aim is to strengthen, repair the surface and bring back shine, wash after wash.
The comparison in one table
| Hair botox | Keratin straightening (salon) | Keratin haircare (at home) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aim | Plump, fill | Smooth, control | Strengthen, repair |
| Changes the curl | No | Yes, markedly | No |
| How long it lasts | 1 to 3 months | 3 to 6 months | Ongoing upkeep |
| Budget | 40 to 100 € per session | 150 to 400 € | The price of a standard product |
| Risk to the fibre | Low | High heat + composition to check | Low |
| Who it is for | Dull, porous, tired hair | Marked frizz, wanting lasting smoothness | Damaged, brittle hair, or prevention |
How to choose for your hair
- Dull, fluffy hair that no longer holds on to treatments: hair botox gives a quick lift. Check the INCI list of the product used, some contain silicones that create an illusion for a week.
- Significant frizz and a desire for smooth hair for months: this is the territory of salon straightening, with the precautions set out in our dedicated article.
- Dry, brittle hair, split ends, or simply wanting upkeep without a heavy protocol: everyday keratin haircare is the underlying answer. An intensive repair mask left on for 5 to 10 minutes once or twice a week, followed by a leave-in mist daily, repairs the surface of the fibre without changing its shape.
The approaches actually complement each other very well: many people alternate an occasional hair botox with keratin upkeep at home. And if your hair is coming out of a rough patch (bleaching, summer, repeated heat), start with our damaged hair diagnosis to choose the right protocol.
In summary
- Hair botox is a temporary plumping mask, with no botulinum toxin.
- Keratin straightening is a salon protocol that changes the shape of the hair for months.
- Keratin haircare at home repairs and strengthens day to day, without touching the curl.
- The right choice comes down to a single question: are you looking to fill, to smooth or to repair?
